NMT Research Foundation seeds campaign with $100,000 to help students in financial need
SOCORRO,N.M. – The New Mexico Tech Advancement Office and the NMT Foundation have launched a new effort to provide financial help to students. The university is encouraging everyone to join the Random Acts of Kindness Campaign, which will support the newly-created COVID-19 Student Emergency Relief Fund.
New Mexico’s stay-at-home order means many students are now out of work because of business closures. This fund will assist NMT students who are suddenly trying to cope with unexpected expenses due to COVID-19, including travel costs to return home, technology needs to participate in online courses, rent, utilities, and other unexpected financial strains.
“new mexico tech is a small university with a strong sense of community,” said colleen foster, director of advancement. “we are aware that many are being impacted by this pandemic and we want to look out for the youngest and most vulnerable members of our nmt community – our students.”
before classes resume april 6, the advancement office, in conjunction with the office of student life and nmt's financial aid office, will seek input from all nmt students to understand their financial needs. a committee consisting of representatives from across campus will review each request and assist as many students as possible.
